ARROW Teaches ELEVATE Students Wind Turbine Basics

ARROW Faculty Sanjay Arwade and David Schmitt taught a module on wind turbine blade pitch and yaw to a group of 15 trans-disciplinary students at UMass Amherst. Using model turbines, the students adjusted blade pitch, and rotor yaw, and tried moving turbines together to understand how these factors effected energy production. All students, be they engineers, political scientists, or economists left with a better understanding of the challenges of wind turbine design, and how multiple nearby turbines interact though wake effects.
