Innovate

ARROW-Innovate is the research arm of ARROW and focuses a rich OSW research environment at ARROW institutions on the characterization and reduction of uncertainty across the OSW system. Key objectives of ARROW-Innovate are increased reliability and the interjection of targeted solutions for OSW resilience. The expertise of the ARROW team covers the areas of infrastructure, power, metocean, and marine and human ecology (spanning DOE’s comprehensive priorities). The research is focused on improving our understanding of uncertainties and performance within a subsystem and propagating that up to the reliability and resilience of the system. The team has special depth in fluids, reliability, and stakeholder engagement, all of which are highlighted in the broader flow of the research.

Innovate Research Areas

Infrastructure

ARROW-Infrastructure innovates in the realm of the machines and structures that enable efficient and economical generation of power from offshore winds, specifically: The first task provides an overall framework for reliability and resilience of the entire OSW system. Each of the other tasks will reduce uncertainties associated with turbine and support structure performance, thereby increasing…

Power

ARROW-Power addresses the transmission system and the power produced at the turbine, including understanding the local and farm flow physics at a level appropriate for novel control schemes for reliability and resilience of the delivered power. Specific efforts include: Since the transmission grid provides the interface between OSW generation and users, grid resilience is of…

Metocean

ARROW-Metocean will improve our understanding of the physics of the atmosphere and ocean, and their interactions, with special emphasis on conditions that prevail during extreme events such as hurricanes and extra-tropical cyclones. These innovations come via: This research will shift probability densities for metocean conditions and climate impacts on those distributions, thereby enhancing reliability. This…

Ecology

ARROW-Ecology encompasses the wide-ranging and complex biological and social systems that interact with, influence and are influenced by OSW. These systems include marine wildlife, human co-users of the ocean and coasts, the communities that stand to benefit from and bear the burdens of OSW development, and the economic systems, including the workforce and supply chain,…
